Both the
Pastoral Plan of the Archdiocese and more specifically the National
Directory for Catechesis, describe the Ministry of Catechesis as an entering
into the mystery of Christ, to encounter him, so as to discover the meaning
of our lives in him. Perhaps there is no better time than the Season of
Christmas to reflect on this truth and to ask the Living Christ, the
God-with-us, to make us ready for a deeper encounter with him and thereby be
transformed, just as were many other people who met Jesus in his life time
or ever since. Only a genuine encounter with the Living Christ will enable
us, as Catechists, to share with the members of our faith community, out of
our very own experience the effects of such encounter as the evangelist
John describes it:
“What we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked
upon and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life - this life was
revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it...so that you also may have
fellowship with us as our fellowship is truly with the Father and with his
Son Jesus Christ...”
